Pleasantville, N.Y. – Gabriella Rubin tallied a game-high 24 points to lead Pace University to a 74-54 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East)
led the Dolphins offensively with 13 points, while adding seven rebounds, four blocked shots, two steals and two assists. Sophomore guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse)
posted 11 points, four steals and three assists. Junior guard
Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central)
tallied 10 points, four steals and three rebounds.
Rubin, who only scored in two quarters, recorded 15 of her points in the second quarter and tallied the final nine in the fourth quarter, while adding three steals. Alexandra Monteleone posted 11 points as the only other Setter in double digits.
After the Dolphins took a 4-2 lead, the Setters scored eight straight points and 13 of the next 15 to take the lead, which they would not relinquish. Monteleone started the run with a jumper and capped it with a three-pointer.
Roberts made two free throws with two seconds left in the first quarter to get the Dolphins within 15-8 after 10 minutes.
The Setters scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to extend their lead to 18. Rubin had eight of the points, while Geena Rosalbo nailed a three-pointer.
After Italee Brown-Smikle made a three-pointer to give Pace a 30-10 lead with 6:05 left in the half, the Dolphins scored 12 of the next 15 points to trim their deficit to 11 (33-22) with 2:20 to go. Purcell and senior forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles)
each scored four points in the span.
Rubin had four points around two free throws by Webster to give Pace a 37-24 lead at halftime.
Le Moyne scored the first four points of the third quarter to get within single digits. Dobrovosky made a lay-up and a free throw on separate possessions and then Purcell converted a foul shot with 8:21 left in the quarter.
Pace answered with a 9-2 spurt over five and one-half minutes to push its lead back to 16. Monteleone recorded the first four points in the span.
Webster made three straight free throws before the teams traded points over the last 1:44 as Pace took a 50-37 lead into the final quarter.
After Roberts hit a three-pointer to get the Dolphins within 10 (60-50) with 4:58 left, the Setters scored 11 straight points over 3:10 to put the game away. Rubin and Rosalbo each made four free throws in the span.
Roberts made a pair of lay-ups around a Rubin three-pointer in the final 51 seconds to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (4-3, 2-3 NE10), which has dropped three straight games at Pace, travels to Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m.
